Denver mayors to celebrate visions of the city at History Colorado event

The community is invited to a special event with History Colorado and Denver mayors from 7-8:30 p.m. on Aug. 18. The event is being offered in person at the History Colorado Center, 1200 N. Broadway in Denver, or as a virtual live-stream event.

Called A City Imagined: A Historic Evening with Denver Mayors, this event is the grand finale of History Colorado’s exhibit, “Building Denver: Visions of the Capital City.” This exhibit examines Denver’s history from 1860 to the present through architecture and urban development, including the visions and stories of civic leaders, designers and residents.

Special guests for the Aug. 18 event are Federico Peña, who served as Denver’s mayor from 1983 to 1991; Wellington Webb, who served as Denver’s mayor from 1991 to 2003; current Denver mayor Michael Hancock; and Sen. John Hickenlooper, who served as Denver’s mayor from 2003 to 2011 and as governor of Colorado from 2011 to 2019. These elected officials will discuss the past four decades and how their work has shaped the city.

“The key to having a better future is to really understand the past,” Hickenlooper said in a news release. “Mayor Peña knew that, Mayor Webb knew that, Mayor Hancock knew that, and when we all get together, we will talk about our history and hopefully the community can use that to make an even better future.”

Tickets for both the in-person and live-stream experiences cost $15 for the general public and $10 for History Colorado members. For in-person attendees, doors open at 6 p.m. for those who would like to visit the Building Denver exhibit prior to the A City Imagined program. The exhibit’s run ends on Sept. 5.

Event tickets can be purchased online at or by visiting and browsing through the upcoming events via the website’s event’s tab.
