AURORA -- The Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs will be the host venue for this year's state volleyball tournament.
Brad Cochi, CHSAA's new digital media director, also said the tournament will take place May 12-13. Originally, it was going to be at the NORCO volleyball facility in Loveland. But the gradual loosening of COVID-19 related restrictions and CHSAA's desire to accommodate as many spectators as possible prompted the decision.
Bethany Brookens, CHSAA's assistant commissioner who administers volleyball, said she and her staff investigated several other options.
“We are incredibly grateful to the World Arena and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation for their partnership allowing the CHSAA to host our state volleyball championships in Colorado Springs,” Brookens said in a statement. “They have been incredible to work with – especially this pandemic year – and we appreciate their support and dedication in valuing our student-participants, schools, coaches, and communities. This is a true team effort across the city of Colorado Springs."
Cochi said the Broadmoor is in use as a COVID-19 vaccine site. That forced CHSAA to push the tournament to mid-May. El Paso County is actively working on spectator variances for a number of spectators. In the statement, Brookens said the association is optimistic about the potential total.
"As a community, we're grateful for the opportunity to welcome athletes and their families from across the state to Colorado Springs,” said Doug Martin, acting CEO of the Colorado Springs Sports Corp. in the statement. “We know they'll enjoy their time here and encourage them to visit the many attractions in the area including the spectacular U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum.”
Cochi said official attendance numbers and a specific tournament format will be announced at a later date. All competitors, coaches, officials, staff and spectators will be required to comply with local public health guidelines at all times.
